The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division has collected fines from stores in Forsyth, Hoke, New Hanover, Randolph, Sampson and Wake counties because of excessive price-scanner errors.
The N.C. Board of Agriculture will hold a meeting Monday, Nov. 8, at 1:30 p.m. in the Martin Building at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.The board will take up the following items:
County governments and nonprofit groups may now apply for funding assistance from the N.C. Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund for farmland preservation projects. Applicants have until Friday, Dec.17, to apply.Grants are available to secure agricultural conservation easements on lands used for agricultural production; to support public and private enterprise programs that promote profitable and sustainable agricultural, horticultural and forestland activities; and for the development of agricultural plans.
North Carolina tobacco growers will vote Nov. 18 on whether to continue a self-assessment of 10 cents per 100 pounds of flue-cured and burley tobacco sold to support tobacco research and education. The check-off program started in 1991 and allocates about $200,000 annually to tobacco-related research and extension projects at N.C. State University. State law requires a referendum be held every six years.
Peak-season soil testing fees are set to take effect Dec. 1 through March 31, 2022, pending final approval by the N.C. Board of Agriculture at its Nov. 19 meeting. Submitting soil samples to the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Agronomic Services lab before that date will mean growers and homeowners can avoid the $4 per sample fee.
Layla Bonilla of Garner was a two-day winner in the N.C. State Fair’s Home Chef Challenge, winning the Tip to Sirloin Steak Salad contest Wednesday, Oct. 19, and the Healthy Grain BowlChallenge presented by Wegmans on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The winning recipes showcased Bonilla’s culinary range as one recipe featured a steak and salad dish and the second was a vegan veggie dish.
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler led a ribbon-cutting today at the newest building on the grounds of the N.C. State Fair in Raleigh. He officially named the building the James Robert “Bob” Stanfield Natural Resources Center in honor of the man who managed its construction and multiple buildings in Heritage Circle.
