Layla Bonilla of Garner was a two-day winner in the N.C. State Fair’s Home Chef Challenge, winning the Tip to Sirloin Steak Salad contest Wednesday, Oct. 19, and the Healthy Grain BowlChallenge presented by Wegmans on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The winning recipes showcased Bonilla’s culinary range as one recipe featured a steak and salad dish and the second was a vegan veggie dish.
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler led a ribbon-cutting today at the newest building on the grounds of the N.C. State Fair in Raleigh. He officially named the building the James Robert “Bob” Stanfield Natural Resources Center in honor of the man who managed its construction and multiple buildings in Heritage Circle.
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler inducted four new members into the N.C.State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame Sunday at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.“This is one of my favorite events each year, because it gives me the opportunity to recognize themen and women who have helped to make our livestock shows some of the best in the nation,”Troxler said. “Today’s inductees join a select group that has been honored for outstandingsupport of agriculture and livestock at the N.C. The N.C. Specialty Foods Association recently announced winners of its 2021 product competition during the final virtual Summer of Success event.There was a total of 147 entries in this year’s competition across nine categories. Fairgoers at the 2021 N.C. State Fair will find some of their favorite exhibits in new locationsthis year with the move of the Got to Be NC Pavilion into Dorton Arena, the NC Public House into the South Side of Dorton Arena and the Folk Festival near the Old Church by the Village of Yesteryear.
The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has extended its deadline to Dec. 31 to apply for a $79.6 million USDA grant for poultry, livestock and plasticulture producers and woodland owners in 90 counties who suffered losses in 2018-2019 from Hurricanes Florence, Michael and Dorian.This program will offer direct payments to eligible poultry/livestock and plasticulture producers. Assistance will only involve losses associated with these hurricanes that were not covered under other USDA disaster programs.
