According to 9 CFR 314.9(a) “Specimens of condemned or other inedible materials, including embryos and specimens of animals parasites, may be released for educational, research, or other nonfood purposes under a permit.” To obtain a permit, an application must be submitted to NCDA&CS Meat and Poultry Inspection Division. An application maybe submitted either electronically or by mail.
Items to consider before submitting the application:

Steps to completing an application:
- Obtain permission from the management of a slaughterhouse under NCDA&CS MPID’s jurisdiction to collect the material you need. Document the establishment official's name that gave permission and the date/time of the conversation.
