Poultry Exempt Operators

All poultry in North Carolina must be slaughtered at a Federally inspected establishment unless produced under one of the poultry exemptions listed below.  Poultry Exempt Operations qualify under the North Carolina Poultry Products Inspection Law (NCPPL) and the Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA) to slaughter and process poultry without the benefit of daily Federal or State inspection and do not require a grant of inspection.  While such operations are exempt from continuous bird-by-bird inspection and the daily presence of inspectors, they are not exempt from all requirements.  All businesses operating under a poultry exemption can only slaughter healthy birds of their own raising and must produce poultry products that are not adulterated or misbranded. These products cannot bear the State or Federal inspection legend.
