Canva is a versatile design platform used to create outreach materials such as flyers, postcards, newsletters, social media graphics, presentations, and event materials.
This introductory workshop is designed to help participants better understand both the technical tools within Canva and the communication principles behind effective outreach design. Participants will explore how people process visual information, learn foundational marketing and design strategies, and apply those concepts to real-world conservation and community outreach materials.
Attendees will learn:
- Basic Canva functionality and navigation
- Differences between Canva Free and Canva Pro
- Core design principles, including hierarchy, contrast, spacing, color, readability, and accessibility
- How visual communication impacts audience engagement and comprehension
- Practical strategies for designing flyers, postcards, newsletters, and outreach materials
- Tips for branding consistency, audience-focused communication, and effective marketing approaches
This workshop is intended to be an introductory interaction with Canva. Participants may use either Canva Free or Canva Pro. There will be opportunities for guided exercises, live demonstrations, independent project work, and individualized feedback from session leads and mentors.
Participants are encouraged to bring ideas for outreach materials, events, campaigns, or communication projects they would like to develop during the workshop.
We also recommend attendees participate in the National Wildlife Federation’s “Grow More” curriculum on June 30 in Harnett County. Together, these two programs support multiple approaches and communication frameworks for effectively engaging farmers and communities.
This is a computer-based workshop. Attendees must bring their own laptop and should create a Canva account prior to attending. Lunch is included in the registration fee.
Attendance is capped at 20 participants.
