This Soils Workshop will equip conservation professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively apply soil data in Best Management Practice (BMP) planning. Each workshop blends classroom instruction with field‑based learning, offering practical demonstrations on how soil characteristics—such as drainage, depth, slope, and structure—shape technical decisions made in the field.
Participants will receive guided instruction on how to navigate Web Soil Survey (WSS), conduct basic field verification using augers and probes, and identify potential limitations or surprises that may influence BMP feasibility. The workshops also highlight when and why engaging a soil scientist becomes necessary.
Designed for real-world application, these trainings help district and NRCS field staff strengthen their soil science foundation, improve field assessment accuracy, and plan BMPs more effectively and confidently.
