
East Wake Warrior Burger a winning recipe in the N.C. Cattlemen’s Beef Council contest
DeMarco Bizzell of Wendell took home a blue ribbon and $200 for his East Wake Warrior Burger in the N.C. Cattlemen’s Beef Council It’s All About Hamburger competition.
Julia Truelove of Raleigh came in second with her Black and Blue Burger Stew and won $150. In third place, earning $100, was Jonathon Finch of Holly Springs with Southern Dude Ranch Beef Casserole.
Each recipe entry was required to have at least three ounces of hamburger per serving and was judged on taste, creativity and appearance.
The winning recipe follows:
East Wake Warrior Burger
- 8 3-ounce ground beef patties
- 3 medium North Carolina sweet potatoes
- ½ cup butter
- ½ cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Pinch of salt
- 8 slices white cheddar cheese
- Lettuce
- 8 potato rolls
Sauce:
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 1/8 cup ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon ground all spice
- ½ cup Dijon mustard
- ½ cup hot mustard
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire
- ½ cup lime juice
- 1 tablespoon cayenne
In a medium pot, combine sauce ingredients and bring to a boil, then simmer. In another pot, boil sweet potatoes until tender. Let potatoes cool slightly and cut them into ¼ - ½ -inch thick slices. Sprinkle potatoes with cinnamon.
Grill hamburger patties on an open grill. Sprinkle with cayenne, then place cheese on patties and continue to cook until cheese is melted and burgers are done. Spread 1 tablespoon of sauce on the bun. Place patty on bun, then add lettuce and sliced sweet potato.
