Motor Fuels Section
As of March 23rd the Motor Fuels Laboratory staff will be onsite as necessary to help limit the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Clients will still be able to drop off samples during business hours but only after first arranging to do so. Please contact the lab by phone at 919-733-3246 and leave a message on the answering machine that includes the following information:
- Your name
- Phone number where you can be reached
- The date and time you would like to drop the sample off
Messages will be checked several times a day during the business hours listed below, and someone from the lab will contact you to coordinate the drop off. By taking these measures, we hope to minimize any potential disruption in laboratory services while also promoting the health and safety of our clients and staff.
Normal Business Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
The Motor Fuels section is responsible for enforcing motor fuel (gasoline and diesel fuel) quality standards, heating fuel (kerosene and fuel oil) quality standards, and motor oil quality standards. Tests are performed on site and at the Motor Fuels Laboratory in Raleigh.
Registering a Motor Fuel Brand Name: North Carolina law requires that all motor fuel products sold within the State bear a brand name that has been registered with the Director. Click here to download the form for registering a new brand name and complete it using the instructions provided on the second page. Please call the Motor Fuels Program Manager at 919-733-3246 if you have any questions regarding this form, or to check to see if the brand name you want to register is already in use.
