Gypsy moth program

2008 Proposed Treatments

The NCDA&CS Gypsy Moth Program has proposed two aerial treatment blocks for 2008, in Caswell and Warren Counties.  A treatment alternative will not be finalized until input from residents in these areas has been received.  Information on an opportunity for local residents to give their input may be found here.

 A.       Milton NC      This proposed spray block in Caswell County is centered roughly on the town of Milton, which lies at the intersection of NC Highways 57 and 62, along the Virginia state line.  Approximately 520 houses and rental properties and 20 churches are in this block.  The landscape is rolling and primarily rural, with some population clusters and farmland mixed in with wooded areas.  Many different tree species are present, including oak, hickory, pine, sweetgum, sycamore, cedar, willow, and many others.  The Dan River runs through the northern portion of this block, and many creeks are also located within the block.  Numerous farm ponds are located within this block.  One water tower and an old, unused water tower are situated in the town of Milton, along with a radio tower.  A power transmission line runs parallel and somewhat south of NC Highway 57 as it runs southeast to northwest through the northeast corner of this proposed block.  This block is proposed to receive 1 application of Disrupt ® II Pheromone Flakes.

B.         Bracey                        This proposed spray block of 502 acres is located approximately one (1) mile south of the Virginia state line in Warren County, NC.  The southwestern corner of the block starts at approximately Mile Marker 232 on I-85 north. There is a Rest Area at Mile Marker 231 on I-85 south. A tower is located just outside the northwest corner of the block on Rooker Dairy Road. The northwestern boundary of the block stops just short of Exit 233 on I-85 north.  US 1/401 travels in a southerly direction through the block on the southeastern side. Mac Powell Road (State Road 1211) comes off US 1/401 and runs through the center of the block. There are several paths leading off this road, some of which are gated. Young Dead End Road (State Road 1303) also comes off US 1/401 on the eastern side of the block. The block has approximately twenty-five (25) houses with several pasture areas containing livestock (horses). There are several locations with logging activities in the area. The block has several fields in cultivation as well as fallow fields and a couple of ponds. The town of Wise, NC is located approximately 2.5-3 miles south of the block. The elevation at this site ranges from 250 to 350 feet above sea level. The predominant vegetation in the area is mostly pine with red oak, white oak, sycamore, red cedar, holly, sweetgum and river birch.  This block is proposed to receive 2 applications of Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki.
