Sweetpotato Weevil Quarantined Areas in North Carolina
Map with Sweetpotato Weevil Quarantined Areas Indicated

Map Legend Red=Quarantined Area   Quarantined Area - The production of sweetpotatoes is not allowed in the quarantined area.

Two southeastern counties in North Carolina are partially regulated due to the occurence of sweetpotato weevils in coastal zones of Brunswick and New Hanover. These weevils are able to survive in the absence of sweetpotatoes by subsisting on seaside morning glory, a relative of sweetpotatoes. The quarantined area includes the following:

  1. That portion of Brunswick County bordered on the north by the Intracoastal Waterway and on the east by the Cape Fear River and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by a straight line beginning at a junction of Highway 133 with the Intracoastal Waterway, extending south through the point where Highway 133 ends, and terminating at the junction of said straight line with the Atlantic Ocean, and;
  2. In New Hanover County the entire island bordered on the west by the Cape Fear River and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and south of that line established from the Carolina Beach Inlet from the Atlantic Ocean along the Intracoastal Waterway at Snow Canal until it reaches the Cape Fear River.
