N.C. Senate, House face off in milk-chugging contest
Wednesday, June 8

WHAT:

Members of North Carolina’s General Assembly will compete in a milk-chugging contest to raise awareness for the state’s dairy industry. During the contest, teams of three will race to see which team can finish six pints of milk in the fastest time. Following the contest, attendees will be able to enjoy free ice cream samples.

WHERE:

North Portico of Legislative Building

WHO: Rep. Efton Sager of Goldsboro and Sen. Brent Jackson of Autryville, who sit on the General Assembly’s agriculture committees, will compete in the contest. The first-place team will receive $200 for a charity of its choice, and the second-place team will receive $100 for its selected charity. The House will chug on behalf of the North Carolina FFA Foundation, and the Senate will compete for the N.C. Friends of Agriculture Foundation.

The event is sponsored by the Cooperative Council of North Carolina, N.C. Dairy Industry Promotion Committee and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Milkco will provide milk for the event, and Harris-Teeter will provide ice cream.

North Carolina has 290 dairy farms with 43,000 milk cows that produce more than 100 million gallons of milk. The state leads the Southeast for most milk production per cow. In addition, the N.C. dairy industry produces 15.9 million gallons of ice cream annually.
