Largest-watermelon contest set for State Farmers Market's
Watermelon Day Thursday, Aug. 5
Local growers will bring their heftiest harvest to compete for bragging rights in the largest-watermelon contest during Watermelon Day at the State Farmers Market. Attendees can watch the weigh-in, sample free watermelon slices and visit with N.C. Watermelon Queen Madelyn Varner.
Weigh-in time for the competition begins at noon in the Farmers Building, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four melons: $600 for first, $400 for second, $300 for third and $200 for fourth place. Each grower may submit one entry, and all entries must be grown in North Carolina. Growers must be able to identify where the watermelon was grown.
