| WHO/WHAT: | Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and Clyde Fitzgerald, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, will talk about the increased demand for food assistance and how the federal government and the state are helping to meet the need. |

| WHY: | The troubled economy has increased demand for assistance from food banks. The federal stimulus bill includes additional funding for programs that make food available to hunger-relief agencies. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services distributes food supplied by the federal government to hunger-relief agencies across the state. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina serves more than 400 nonprofit partner agencies that annually feed thousands of people in need throughout 18 counties. |
