State Farmers Market to host Great Pumpkin Contest

RALEIGH—After a record-breaking 781 pound pumpkin took home top honors last year, the State Farmers Market will host its 23rd annual Great Pumpkin Contest Thursday, Oct. 9, to honor the best-decorated and largest pumpkins.

“This is a fun fall kickoff for children and adults alike,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “It’s also a great place to get all of your fall holiday decorations, including pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and bales of straw.”

The celebration will last from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will also include a moonwalk, face painting, music and a cruise giveaway from Linda Craft & Team Realty.

The decorated-pumpkin contest offers three age divisions: 8 years and younger, 9-15, and 16 and older. Entrants can drop off decorated pumpkins Wednesday, Oct. 8, between 3 and 5 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 9, between 7 and 9 a.m. in the Farmers Building.

Judging begins at 9:30 a.m. and will be based on use of color, shapes, paint and creativity. Pumpkins can be carved, painted or a combination of both, and can use other forms of art media. A top prize of $40 will be awarded in each category, with second, third and fourth places earning $25, $10 and $5, respectively.

Entries in the largest-pumpkin contest, which is open to all ages, must be dropped off between 11 and 11:30 a.m. in the Farmers Building before a noon weigh-in. All entries must be grown in North Carolina and will become the property of the State Farmers Market. All pumpkins must be free of decay and have their stems trimmed to a maximum of five inches.

The largest pumpkin by weight will receive a $300 first prize. Second- and third-place prizes of $200 and $100 will be awarded.

Wyatt-Quarles Seed Co., State Farmers Market Restaurant, Linda Craft & Team Realty, State Farmers Market Restaurant, N.C. Seafood Restaurant and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services are sponsoring the event. For additional information and complete rules, call the market at (919) 733-7417 or visit www.ncdamarkets.org.
