Peach dessert contest slated for annual
State Farmers Market Peach Day July 24
RALEIGH – The State Farmers Market will host its annual Peach Day Thursday, July 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in celebration of North Carolina’s 2008 peach season. Visitors will be able to taste free samples of peach ice cream, meet the N.C. Peach Queen and take home peach recipes.
For peach lovers with their own tasty recipes, peach dessert contest will be held with more than $175 in prize money in both adult and children’s divisions.
“Any dessert featuring fresh N.C. peaches from our state’s farmers is a tasty one,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “The judges of this competition will surely have a tough time deciding who has the best recipes, but everyone who takes home some of these delicious fruits will be a winner.”
Entries must be received in throwaway containers between 8 and 10 a.m. at the State Farmers Market office before judging begins at 10 a.m. All desserts must be made with peaches grown in North Carolina and contain at least two cups of peaches per recipes. Recipes need not be original, but must be typed or written along with each contestant’s name, address and telephone number. When the closed-door judging is complete, winners will be announced at the Peach Day exhibit in the Farmers Building. Media will be allowed to cover the judging process.
The five-month peach season officially lasts from June through early October, with different varieties appearing throughout the season. Clingstone peaches, perfect for recipes calling for pureed or diced peaches, and Freestone varieties, named for their easily removed pits, are now on sale at farmers markets and roadside stands across the state, as well as grocery stores featuring local produce.
Peach Day is sponsored by the N.C. Peach Growers Society, N.C. Dairy Industry Promotion Committee, the State Farmers Market and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
