Celebrate Gourd Day at the State Farmers Market on Aug. 11

RALEIGH—Get ready for all things gourds on Aug. 11 for the annual Gourd Day at the State Farmers Market.  Plenty will be available for the picking from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

A gourd’s beauty is all in the eye of the beholder, but they have a rich history.  The gourd has been revered as far back as antiquity for its usefulness and versatility.  The ancient Egyptians placed seed-filled gourds in the crypts of their dead, the Chinese used them for hats, and many civilizations turned these garden oddities into musical instruments and household containers.

“The Tupperware of ancient times is the decorative highlight of fall centerpieces today,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.  “Shoppers will have plenty of selection for decorative and home uses as well as free advice on growing their own gourds.  While visiting the market, be sure to visit other market vendors and take home the fresh taste of North Carolina products.”

Gourd Day will feature gourds, seed, arts and crafts.  Educational information will be available for those interested in growing and decorating with gourds.

Gourd Day is sponsored by the N.C. Gourd Society, the State Farmers Market and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences.

The State Farmers Market offers plenty of fresh vegetables, plants, garden supplies, crafts and baked goods for sale from local vendors.  The market is located at 1201 Agriculture St. in Raleigh, off Exit 297 (Lake Wheeler Road) on Interstate 40.
