2nd Annual BBQ Cook Off and Bluegrass Jam
coming to WNC Farmers Market
Asheville - The Western N.C. Farmers Market will host live bluegrass music and lots of barbecued meat during the 2nd Annual BBQ Cook Off and Bluegrass Jam on Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31.
Admission to the event is free and the festivities kick off on Friday with the "anything other than pork" cooking competition at 1 p.m. and music from Sons of Ralph at 6 p.m.
Bring a chair, get there early and plan to stay all day on Saturday. Southern Crescent kicks off the music portion at 10 a.m. as the ribs and barbecue cooking contests get under way. The Redeye Ramblers follow up at noon, Darren Nicholson at 2:30 p.m. and Whitewater Bluegrass Company featuring Mark Pruett at 4 p.m. For a small fee, the kids can jump around in inflatable rides and have their faces painted.
Competitors will offer samples as well as sell their smoke-cooked delicacies. There are still a few spots left for anyone who thinks they've got the best barbecue in the area. Cash prizes will be offered in three categories - barbecue, ribs and other. Prizes are $500 for first, $300 for second and $100 for third. Each winner will also receive a trophy.
The BBQ Cook Off and Bluegrass Jam is presented by the WNC Farmers Market and Clear Channel Radio. Additional sponsors include Carolina Farm Credit, Farm Bureau of Asheville and Saturn of Asheville.
The farmers market will have two shuttle vans running throughout the property and along the highway to move people to the activity site.
To enter in any of the cooking competitions, or for more information, contact Brian Roberts at the farmers market at (828) 253-1691, ext. 16. The WNC Farmers Market is located at 570 Brevard Road and is easily accessible from both Interstate-40 and Interstate-26.
