Let's Celebrate! Lexington and Davidson County residents can once again look forward to hosting the annual Barbecue Festival. The 27th Annual Barbecue Festival is set for Saturday, October 23, 2010 in Uptown Lexington. The month of October has been declared Barbecue Month,a month full of activities including the Tour de Pig Cycling event, 5K Hawg Run, Pepsi Pig Tale Writing Competition, Golf Tournament, Tennis Tournament, Hawg Shoot Air Rifle Tournament, and many other exciting events.
Six stages of entertainment showcase local and national artist. The festival is for all ages and includes a special section of rides and games for children, the Barbecue Carnival & Family Area. Famous "Lexington Style" Barbecue is served out of three main tents, one at the square and the other two on the North & South ends of the festival.
The Barbecue Festival is especially proud to have been named one of the Top Ten Food Festivals in America by Travel & Leisure Magazine. This year the festival was again selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society�s Top 20 Events for the month of October. The festival was also nominated by Congressman Mel Watt and selected by a committee of the Library of Congress for inclusion in their Local Legacies Program to celebrate the library�s 200th anniversary. The Barbecue Festival has received more than 40 awards from the North Carolina Association of Festivals and Events through their Excellence Awards program. The festival has also received an award from the International Association of Festivals and Events through their Pinnacle Awards program. Most recently the festival received four excellence awards during the North Carolina Association of Festivals & Events Association�s annual conference including the prestigious Festival of the Year award. The Festival is the grand finale to Barbecue Month, which attracts more than 100,000 people annually. This year during the day-long street festival, attendees will enjoy hundreds of exhibits including a juried art/craft show, six stages of outstanding entertainment, a 50-ton pig themed sand sculpture, the Barbecue Carnival and Family area featuring special activities for children, rides and games, the Hogway Speedway racing pigs, an antique car show, Corvette exhibit, the festival "Chop Shop" Lumberjack Sports Show, a bicycle stunt show, 32ft climbing wall and much, much more! The festival also features the best barbecue in the world, and a grand ole time in Uptown Lexington.
All roads, rail, and yes, the skies, lead to the Barbecue Festival. Lexington can be reached by Interstate 85, Highways 64, 52, and 29-70. A great way to travel to the Barbecue Festival is by train. The Piedmont, which originates in Raleigh, and the Carolinian, which originates in Charlotte, will make their once a year stops in Lexington for the festival. Barbecue fans can board the Piedmont in Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Burlington, Greensboro, and High Point. The Carolinian will make stops in Kannapolis and Salisbury before arriving in Lexington. Plan to spend the whole day in Lexington. We'll roll out the red carpet when the train arrives. All aboard the Barbecue Express!
