Peanuts are our business! In fact Powell & Stokes, Inc., a family owned farm supply business in Windsor, NC, has been buying,drying and selling peanuts since 1915. That's four generations worth of knowledge and experience!! But it was not until 20 years ago that we began to put that knowledge to use in the form of cooked peanuts.

Around 1975, Jack Powell Sr., or Papa Jack as family and local folks knew him, began cooking redskin and bald head peanuts for his farmer friends and customers. At first he cooked those tasty treats only during the fall harvest- peanut-picking season- and the winter months that followed. The cooking process at that time involved hot oil, a small popcorn popper, some salt, the absorption tendency of newspaper, and lard-can lids. Still those early experiments at turning out hot, crunchy peanuts gained a loyal following. Farmers and other locals would gather at the warehouse and while munching on peanuts, discuss everything from farming practices, to crop prices, to the unpredictable weather.

Our farmer friends couldn't seem to get enough of those special peanuts. And word traveled far and wide. Before long sales folks and others from "off" began to drop by the warehouse just to taste Papa Jack's peanuts. Thus the idea for "Bertie County Pe

Hours are 7:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday Saturdays during busy seasons 7:00 to 12:00
