Goodness Grows Here
The Children’s Home, Inc. has cared for children, families, and individuals in need for nearly 100 years. With campuses in Winston Salem and Franklin, The Home has served Western North Carolina by being the place “Where Children and Families Matter Most.”
In recent years, The Children’s Home has undergone significant changes, including becoming licensed by the State of North Carolina as a Mental Health Residential Treatment Center. The Home is also licensed as a Mental Health Day Treatment Program and a Child Placing Agency for Family Foster Care and Therapeutic Foster Care. Most recently, The Home officially became a licensed Adoption Agency, specializing in foster-to-adopt placements.
For approximately the first 80 years, the farm was home to a large dairy herd, with other truck farms where produce and other crops were grown to feed the residents. However, with the growth of urban Winston Salem, The Children's Home farm is located on the 200 acre campus in downtown Winston. The farm consists of 70 head of beef cattle, with 20 of those being purebred Belted Galloways. The three acres of garden are filled with a variety of produce including tomatoes, corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, eggplant, cabbage, jalepeno and bell peppers, as well as many other tasty treats. In the fall, we raise from 5-700 pumpkins as well as a smaller fall garden of onions, turnip greens, cabbage and broccoli. Coming soon in 2010 we will have a half-acre Pick-Your-Own strawberry patch!
