Whippoorwill Academy and Village is a delightful place to visit and tour the past as you walk through this small village of yesteryear. Owner and operator, Mrs. Edith Ferguson Carter started this village by moving historical buildings to the family farm many years ago. As an artist, Mrs. Carter has made several videos using her art work to tell the stories of "NC Legends", with "The Legend of Tom Dooley" being the most popular. She is happy to share with groups and give them tours of the village. A favorite is the local jail and chapel. This quaint chapel called "The Chapel of Peace", has been the setting for many lovely weddings over the years.
Many generations have been very active in working this family farm. Presently, there are cattle, a llama and two farm dogs.
The Daniel Boone Day festival is held the second Saturday in May, is a small, but fun filled day for the family to enjoy music, arts and craftsman, food, hayrides, cloggers and self guided tours, Tom Dooley Dramatic Skit and the "Strong Southern Woman Skillet Toss" contest.
In December, a Christmas Open House is held.
A small fee is charged for tours, and donations are accepted and both go for the upkeep of the village. There is an application and fee for weddings at the chapel. This is a perfect place to bring a group for a tour, picnic, celebration or a leisurely time of learning about our heritage. The mountains views are spectacular!

Family Farm features historical museums, including: Tom Dooley Museum, Daniel Boone Replica Cabin, Smokehouse Art Gallery, Matt's Store, Jail, School House, Chapel, Tavern, Blacksmith shop, Weaving room and more.

The village is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, 3-5 pm and during the week by appointment. The Village is closed January through March.
