Whippoorwill Academy and Village

About US
Whippoorwill Academy and Village is a delightful place to visit and tour the past as you walk through this small village of yesteryear. Owner and operator, Mrs. Edith Ferguson Carter started this village by moving historical buildings to the family farm many years ago. As an artist, Mrs. Carter has made several videos using art work to tell the stories of "NC Legends." The "Legend of Tom Dooley" is the most popular one. She is happy to share those with groups and give them a tour of the buildings. A favorite is the local jail and chapel. This quaint chapel called "The Chapel of Peace," has been the setting for many lovely weddings over the years.

Many generations have been very active in working this family farm. Presently, there are cattle, four llamas and two farm dogs.

Daniel Boone Day held the second Saturday in May, is a small, but fun filled day for the family to enjoy music, arts and craftsman, food, hayrides, cloggers and a self guided tours, Tom Dooley Dramatic Skit by the Wilkes Playmakers and the "Strong Southern Woman Skillet Toss" contest. In December, a Christmas Open House is held. No admission fee is charged for tours, but donations for the upkeep of the village are appreciated. There is a small fee for weddings at the chapel. This is a perfect place to bring a group for a tour, picnic, wedding or a leisurely time of learning about our heritage. Mountains views are spectacular!
