Whippoorwill Academy and Village

About US
Whippoorwill Academy and Village is a delightful place to visit. Guests take a step by through history as they tour this small village of yesteryear. Artist, Mrs. Edith Ferguson Carter started this village by moving historical buildings to the family farm many years ago. As an artist, Mrs. Carter had made several videos using her art work to tell the stories of "NC Legends", with "The Legend of Tom Dooley" and "Daniel Boone" are the most popular stories. We are happy to share this intriguing village with groups or individuals. A favorite is the local jail and chapel. This quaint chapel called "The Chapel of Peace", has been the setting for many lovely weddings over the years. Since Mrs. Carter passed away in 2014, her daughters Margaret Martine and Sharon Underwood, both retired educators are directing the village along with the families and many volunteers. The village manager is Dr.Collee Riddle.

Many generations have been very active in working this family farm. Presently, the focus is the historical village but it has been an active farm in the past. Presently, there are cattle and two farm dogs.

The Daniel Boone Day festival is held the third Saturday in May, is a small, but fun filled day for the family to enjoy music, arts and craftsman, food, hayrides, cloggers and self guided tours, Tom Dooley Dramatic Skit and the "Strong Southern Woman Skillet Toss" contest. A small fee is charged for tours, and donations are accepted and both go for the upkeep of the village. There is an application and fee for weddings at the chapel. This is a perfect place to bring a group for a tour, picnic, celebration or a leisurely time of learning about our heritage. The mountains views are spectacular!
