Besh Dish Winners to Share the Spotlight with Paula Dean at State Fair

Local North Carolina chefs will share the stage with national cooking celebrity Paula Dean on Wednesday, October 17 at this year’s State Fair as part of their recognition as winners of the Best Dish in NC competition, sponsored by Goodness Grows in North Carolina. The first, second, and third place winners from this years contest will be presented their awards during the Food Channel star’s show at 7:30 p.m. North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler will join Ms. Dean to present the awards.

The awards presentation at this year’s fair will be the culmination of a long series of events dating back to the spring when the Best Dish in NC competition actually began. Finalists for the competition were picked from a number of entries and were judged during the summer months by three mystery judges. Winners were chosen based on the featured dishes’ use of North Carolina products and ingredients, creativity, feature and promotion of the dishes, presentation, and of course, taste.

The winners were officially announced in August. Since that time, the winners have received cash prizes and free advertising in Our State magazine (October issue), all sponsored by Goodness Grows in North Carolina, the marketing program for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The competition winners who will be present for Wednesday night’s presentation represent three different categories from the Best Dish competition. Representing the Casual category will be first place winner Catch Restaurant from Wilmington, second place winner Blackwater Grille from Hendersonville, and third place finisher Storie Street Grille from Blowing Rock. From the Fine Dining category will be first place winner Deluxe from Wilmington, second place winner Sharpies Grill and Bar from Beaufort, and the third place finisher Indigo Marsh from Surf City. The Chain category will be represented by first place winner Earth Fare from Asheville, second place finisher Texas Steakhouse and Saloon out of Rocky Mount, and third place finisher Andy’s Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers based out of Mount Olive.

The Best Dish in North Carolina competition, sponsored by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and its Goodness Grows in North Carolina program, is now in its second year of existence. The statewide competition determines who serves the best fare in North Carolina. The competition was created to recognize and reward the efforts of restaurants and chefs who use North Carolina products regularly in their menus and to increase public awareness of the quality of food, restaurants, and chefs here in North Carolina.
