Buncombe County youth receives top honors in District Junior Feeder Calf Show

FLETCHER – Jessica Freeman of Buncombe County was the Champion of the Homegrown Feeder Calf competition—animals in this class must have been born, bred and raised on the exhibitor’s farm—Friday night at the N.C. Mountain State Fair’s WNC District Junior Feeder Calf Show. Freeman also took home top honors in the Feeder Calf competition as the Grand Champion. Bill Jones, also of Buncombe County, was named the Reserve Grand Champion.
The District Junior Feeder Calf Show is open to any youth under the age of 21 living in a western North Carolina county including Avery, Burke, Rutherford, Polk, McDowell, and all counties west. Calves must have weighed between 350 and 750 pounds to be eligible for judging.
The show was sponsored by the Western North Carolina Beef Commission and the N.C. Mountain State Fair. Show winners were awarded trophies, ribbons, and cash prizes.
