WNC District Junior Beef Heifer Show winners announced

FLETCHER – Derek Jones of Buncombe County was awarded the Supreme Champion title at Saturday’s WNC District Junior Beef Heifer Show at the N.C. Mountain State Fair. Grand Champions from five different divisions competed to see who would be named Supreme Champion. Jones won the title after being named Grand Champion in the Commercial division.  

Kelsi Cartwright was the Reserve Grand Champion from the Commercial division. Laura Nelon of Buncombe County was the Grand Champion of the Angus division, while Ty Reeves, also of Buncombe County, was the Reserve Grand Champion in that division. In the Red Angus Division, Michala Muse of Haywood County won both the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion titles (exhibitors are allowed to show two animals per class if desired). Chris Mackey and Clark Worley, both of Madison County, were the Grand and Reserve Grand Champions respectively in the Gelbvieh division. A final division for all other breeds named Whitney Meadows of Buncombe County Grand Champion and Shianne Freeman, also of Buncombe County, Reserve Grand Champion.

Exhibitors must have been the primary caretaker of the heifer for at least 60 days prior to the show date. Heifers must have been at least three quarters beef breed.

The show was sponsored by the Western North Carolina Beef Commission and the N.C. Mountain State Fair. Show winners were awarded trophies, ribbons, and cash prizes.
