Local youths excel at Junior Market Steer Show

FLETCHER – Derek Jones of Buncombe County was the Grand Champion in Saturday morning’s WNC District Junior Market Steer Show at the N.C. Mountain State Fair. Courtney Dryman of Macon County was named the show’s Reserve Grand Champion.
Isaac Wallace, also of Macon County, won Champion in the Homegrown Junior Market Steer competition at the same show. Animals in this class must have been born, bred, and raised on the exhibitor’s farm.
Exhibitors must have been the owner of their animal for at least five months prior to show date and have personally cared for the animal themselves. Steers shown must have been lass than 24 months of age.
The show was sponsored by the Western North Carolina Beef Commission and the N.C. Mountain State Fair. Show winners were awarded trophies, ribbons, and cash prizes.
