Lineup set for Mountain Music Competition at Mountain Fair
FLETCHER – Local amateur musicians will try and pick their way onto the main concert stage in McGough Arena at this year’s N.C. Mountain State Fair as the opening act for the Travelin’ McCourys, who will perform on Sunday, September 20. Artists playing both traditional Old Time music and Bluegrass music will compete on the Heritage Stage for the honor beginning on Monday, September 14 and lasting until the final Saturday, September 19.
In addition to the group competitions, there will also be competitions for individual instruments in both musical styles. The bands will begin competing each night at 7:00 p.m.
The only break in the competition will occur on Thursday, September 17 when a local bluegrass jam session which has been taking place in Asheville for over 60 years will move to the fair. Ms. Neila Hyatt, who hosts the session at her house on Brevard Road, will bring the gathering to the Heritage Stage for the first time this year. Musicians playing instruments of all types are invited to join in on the improvisational session, which will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will last as long as the music does—or until the fair gates close.
The Heritage Stage will also host local music, dance and clogging groups on the nights leading up to the competition. A complete schedule of acts to appear on the Heritage Stage throughout the fair is given below.
The N.C. Mountain State Fair runs September 11-20, at the WNC Agricultural Center. For more information, visit www.mountainfair.org or call (828) 687-1414.
