Competition Heats Up for Fair’s Cooking Contests

FLETCHER – Nearly $3000 in premiums will be up for grabs at this year’s North Carolina Mountain State Fair cooking competitions, with main ingredients ranging from North Carolina apples to Spam. Competitions take place daily beginning on opening night, Friday, September 11th. In addition to cash prizes, there will also be chances to advance to national competitions and to raise money for charitable causes.
“The cooking competitions are always so much fun. The entries get more and more creative each year,” said Sue Estridge, Competition Coordinator. “We always have lots of participation from our local residents and it seems the participants get younger each year”.
The following is a list of cooking and recipe contests for the 2009 North Carolina Mountain State Fair. All entries must be received by August 31 and recipes must be delivered on time for judging the day of the contest.
- Friday, September 11, 7:00 p.m. – House Autry Mills “Make It Quick & Easy” Contest
- Saturday, September 12, 11:00 a.m. – Great American Spam Championship (youth and adult)
- Sunday, September 13, 3:00 p.m. – N.C. Cattleman’s Beef Council “Quick & Easy” Contest
- Monday, September 14, 7:00 p.m. – N.C. Pork Council Tarheel Pork Challenge
- Tuesday, September 15, 7:00 p.m. – N.C. Egg Farmers Incredible! Egg Sandwich Contest
- Wednesday, September 16, 7:00 p.m. – N.C. Pecan Growers Association “Anything Pecan” Contest
- Thursday, September 17, 7:00 p.m. – N.C. Blueberry Association “Anything Blueberry” Contest
- Friday, September 18, 7:00 p.m. – Fleischmann’s Yeast “Bake for the Cure” Contest
- Saturday, September 19, 11:00 a.m. – N.C. Apple Growers Association Apple Recipe Contest
