North Carolina Muscadine Grapes

North Carolina Muscadine GrapesThe first Scuppernongs were discovered growing on the coast of Georgia and South Carolina by the early American colonists. Many of these vines were shipped to Europe for world famous gardeners; however, scientists have only developed most of today's modern hybrids since 1900. Mr. Fry of Griffin, Georgia was a pioneer in hybridizing the Muscadine, the most famous of his hybrids was the 'Fry" named after it's progenitor and is still considered by experts as the sweetest and the largest by most grape fanciers.

Even though not technically correct, we North Carolinians' prefer to refer to the dark colored grape as "Muscadines" and the bronze or light colored grapes as "Scuppernongs". This delicious grape that grows wild in the woodlands of the Southeast is extremely vigorous, easy to grow and is as Southern as Peaches, Cotton and Grits.
