Mature female goats (does) are usually bred (mated) in the fall. After a 5-months pregnancy (gestation) a very approximate average of 2 kids are born per doe. The kids nurse their mothers for a variable period (months), are weaned, and are kept as replacement or slaughtered for meat.

Goats produce several products, depending upon the breed. Dairy goats produce milk for consumption, cheese production, etc. Angora goats produce a fiber used for clothes, etc. Meat goats produce kids raised to produce meat for slaughter. Many goats are kept as pets or for show.

Goats are ruminants and have a special "4-compartment stomach". They eat grass, browse, and grain.
