Disposal of Used Oil

How can I dispose of used oil?

Used oil or motor vehicle oil filters may not be disposed of in landfills N.C.G.S. § 130A‑309.10(f)(2), (10). While it is illegal to dispose of oil in a landfill, many landfills have collection programs and will accept used oil. Contact your local landfill to see if they have a used oil collection program. The EPA presumes that used oil will be recycled or disposed of by a used oil handler. If you are not planning on recycling your used oil or sending oil to a collection facility then oil regulations for proper transportation and disposal can be found in 40 CFR 279.
